Skyebel Cakes Website

We recently finished the website for Skyebel Cakes. This was a fun project for a couple of reasons. Firstly, there were a lot of images to work with, so we could focus the theme of the website around the images of the delicious cakes. Secondly, Tania and Rachel, the team behind Skyebel, have made lots of interesting cakes with unique themes, so it was fun to see all the different designs. The cakes range from Christmas cupcakes through to football team themed birthday cakes, and the collection is growing by the day.

A real community has built up around Skyebel, which started as a hobby for Rachel and Tania. Soon they were getting so many requests for cakes that it has developed into a business for them. It's great to see an enjoyable hobby grow into something that can also earn money, and the girls have built quite a following already. This can be seen by the Facebook Like Box on the website, which shows that Skyebel's Facebook page has 35 people liking it after only being out a day!

As for the actual Skyebel Cakes website, what you can't tell from the screenshot posted here is that many of the images on the home page are part of a set. They cycle through individual slideshows and when you click on one image in a set a section opens at the top of the page with a description of the set and arrows to see the other cakes.

We also added a newsletter widget at the bottom of each page so that people can join the girls' "cake club" and receive regular updates on what's happening. Tania and Rachel will put out a newsletter at some stage with useful info and news for their subscribers. This is a great way to build a community around what you're doing, and to get them involved in the whole process.

The site was built using Wordpress and the newsletter function uses a simple plug in that maintains a database of subscribers attached to the site itself, without having to use a third party mailing service. The Facebook like box is also a Wordpress plug in that is simple to use and has the option to just show followers or also include your latest Facebook updates as part of the feed.

We also added a blog section to the site which will serve two purposes. First and foremost it will show visitors recent projects and tell them a little about each cake the girls have made lately. Secondly, it will be a great way to get the site noticed on search engines, and therefore by potential customers. The more times keywords related to cakes appear on the website (including on the blog page), the more relevant Google will view the site for people searching for cake making services. Just by having a blog that's updated every couple of weeks or so, you will automatically be ahead of your competition who aren't adding any content to their website.
